Getting into a bit of scrape
(Lloyd) the joy of getting out and about means you are playing a game of risk and reward, today we were more than a little burnt for our risk.
Not mugged as many of our readers seemed to predict (not sure where that had come from although it turns out Chrissi has got a bit of form in Spain), well not in the conventional sense, that will come later when Avis do their worst, and bill us for the fairly sizeable marks on our brand spanking new mercedes. Manuel was quite a clumsy waiter, Wayne Norris used to get into scrapes, and always seemed to get out of them. So today we'll go with the Manuel suggestion. Perhaps it can change daily. Keep 'em coming!
Great run this morning, such a brilliant way to explore new territory. The serious runner (Bryn) doesn't need to train like the rest of us so Chrissi, Carys and I made our way down, down, down into Fuengirola. Mazed our way through the early morning streets, well reasonably early, hadn't woken up until 8am ourselves!!
Our route today
When we hit the sea front I had a couple of miles to myself along the front, and had to extend alongside the road going out of town to get my distance in, running adds colour right (see below). The girls wanted to take it a bit easier on the way back so I went ahead and did a bit of hill training, pretty steep pull up to our accommodation. Clearly hadn't appreciated the enjoyment of the going downhill bit earlier.
On an appropriate note the day did go downhill a little after that, as we piled into the car and took a drive down to Marbella. The plan was to stroll around the port, enjoying the finer things in life. The reality was an underground car park, a massive scrape against a pillar, and the local spanish community coming together to lift our car to safety, albeit with a few war wounds.
Continued to drive round Marbella, but it's funny how one experience can sully a place, so we drove back to Fuengirola, and slipped back into sunny, tourist mode, beach side bar, moorish castle to view and generally wind down again.
Back to the digs via big shopping centre for a bit of al fresco dining, and card games as the sun began to fall. So tomorrow we get back on the horse and find another place to visit, apparently the best parking for Gibraltar is a nice underground car park in the Spanish town next door.
See you at the body repair shop ;)

A day of highs and lows, but nevertheless, still a day in a beautiful, hot country abroad. I woke up later than I expected to, probably because of the late night. I caved in however, and decided that if I was to continue eating as much as I was on this holiday, I needed to run at least once or twice, so I set off with the parents.
The first part was enjoyable, and I really liked trying to translate all of the signs and posters in the streets, but it kept getting warmer and I got quite tired and achy. We got down to the sea though and it was a lovely sight. After some running up and down the front and stopping to take photos, we used google maps to jog/walk back to the house. It was less complicated than the way down, and we got back after a little while. Unfortunately, we did lose about 15 euros on the way back to the house.
Brunch was a weird one. I ate a sugared donut, leftover pizza from yesterday and some breadsticks, I think. Not a normal meal, but I just pieced together some things and it was all nice in the end. All of us who needed it got showered and changed before we headed off to Marbella, hoping for a nice day.
We were just parking in a crammed underground car park when we had an 'incident'. The car got wedged against a pillar and the door got scraped. We were helped by a nice couple coming into the car park, a man who worked there and another passer-by. We did manage to lift the car and save it from the entire side being ruined. It was still very unfortunate, especially considering we'd paid to get into the car park, and to get past a toll, and we ended up just returning to Fuengirola. the scrape had put us in a bit of a bad mood, so we abandoned our Marbella plans and went to the Fuengirola beach for a drink.
After we'd walked along the beach, we drove to Carrefour, a large supermarket in Fuengirola and bought a few extra things. I also had a strawberry jam donut from Dunkin' Coffee because i'd heard about the brand before - it was delicious, even though it was my second donut of the day!
We just relaxed through the evening, enjoying the food we'd bought and playing a game we'd brought with us too.

ReplyDeleteSorry to read about you (the car) connecting with the pillar, the extra cost of accidental insurance may seem rather attractive now & when you discuss the matter with Avis when you return the car. Underground/multi story car parking is a nightmare they never manage the spaces big enough for modern cars, to maximise profit. Hope it does not ruin your holiday. Enjoy Gibraltar. xx
DeleteYou do need a google account to respond to your blog with appropriate thoughts. xx
Deleteneed a google account I think? can anyone comment, or just me:)
ReplyDeleteSorry to be running three months behind. I wonder how you would reflect on the events now.
ReplyDeleteIt is nasty to have something like this scratch to upset such a nice holiday.
